Keep cool, fresh water available at all times (summer)

5

Provide multiple waterers placed in shaded areas and refresh the water at least twice daily during hot weather. Add frozen water bottles or ice blocks directly to waterers on days above 90°F (32°C) to keep water temperature down. A laying hen drinks 1-2 pints of water daily, but consumption can double in extreme heat.

Why It Works

Chickens cool themselves primarily through panting, which evaporates moisture from the respiratory tract. This process uses significant water, and dehydration accelerates heat stress rapidly. Cool water also directly lowers core body temperature when consumed.

Tips

  • Add poultry electrolytes to the water during heat waves to replace minerals lost through panting
  • Dark-colored waterers absorb heat — use light-colored or shaded containers
  • A chicken that is panting with wings held away from its body is in active heat stress and needs immediate access to cool water and shade
