Maximize coop ventilation year-round

5

Install ventilation openings near the roofline on multiple sides of the coop, covered with hardware cloth for predator protection. In summer, maximize airflow by opening all vents and windows. In winter, keep upper vents open while ensuring there are no drafts at roost level where birds sleep.

Why It Works

In summer, airflow removes trapped heat that can make the coop 10-20°F hotter than outside air. In winter, ventilation removes moisture from respiration and droppings — moisture is what causes frostbite, not cold temperatures alone. A dry coop at 0°F is safer than a humid coop at 30°F.

Tips

  • If you can smell ammonia inside the coop at any time of year, ventilation is inadequate
  • Ridge vents, gable vents, and soffit vents all work well for passive airflow
  • Never seal a coop for warmth in winter — this traps moisture and causes respiratory disease and frostbite
