Secure all latches and doors against raccoons

5

Install predator-proof latches on every coop door, nest box lid, and run gate. Raccoons have remarkable dexterity — they can lift simple hook-and-eye latches, slide bolt latches, and turn basic knobs. A latch must require two steps to open (like a carabiner or a bolt with a cotter pin) to defeat raccoon paws.

Why It Works

Raccoons can solve single-action latches within minutes. Two-step latches exploit the fact that raccoons struggle to perform two simultaneous motions — pressing and lifting, or squeezing and pulling. Spring-loaded barrel bolts and padlocked hasps are also effective since they resist prying.

Tips

  • Test every latch by trying to open it with one hand and a closed fist — if you can, a raccoon can
  • Add latches to nest box lids, which are often overlooked entry points
  • Check latches weekly for loosening or wear
  • Consider a padlock on the main door if bears are present in your area
