Choose a paddle by weight and material
5
Paddle weight and face material are the two most important factors in paddle selection. They determine whether your game leans toward control, power, or a balance of both.
Weight Categories
- Lightweight (6–7.3 oz): Better control and maneuverability, less arm strain. Good for players with elbow or shoulder issues
- Midweight (7.3–8.4 oz): The sweet spot for beginners. Balances speed, control, and power
- Heavyweight (8.5+ oz): More mass behind shots for power. Best for baseline players who drive the ball
Face Materials
- Carbon fiber: Stiffest and most durable. Best spin generation due to textured surface. Premium option
- Graphite: Lightest and thinnest. Excellent touch and feel. Great for control-oriented play
- Fiberglass/composite: More power and pop. Slightly softer feel. Most affordable option
Tips
- Most paddles use polymer honeycomb cores — they offer the best balance of control and quiet play
- For beginners, start with a midweight carbon fiber or graphite paddle in the $60–100 range
- Avoid wood paddles except as rental/loaner equipment
