Join open play sessions at local courts

5

Open play is the most common format at public pickleball courts. Players stack their paddles in groups of four to queue for the next game, rotating in with different partners and opponents. It's the easiest way to start playing.

How Open Play Works

  1. Arrive at the courts and place your paddle in the queue line
  2. When it's your turn, join three other players for a game to 11
  3. Games rotate every 10–15 minutes
  4. Winners may stay on or rotate depending on local customs

Etiquette

  • Be friendly and encourage other players regardless of skill level
  • Call lines fairly and give the benefit of the doubt to opponents
  • Keep noise appropriate for the venue
  • Introduce yourself — the pickleball community is known for being welcoming to newcomers

Tips

  • Don't be intimidated. Experienced players generally enjoy helping beginners
  • Many facilities designate specific times for beginner-level open play
  • Bring water and expect to play multiple games once you start rotating in
