Remove stuck seed hulls with a quick misting trick

3

Seed hulls (shells) stuck on top of microgreen leaves are a cosmetic nuisance that can also block light and slow growth. This is most common with sunflower, beet, and cilantro microgreens.

How to Remove Them

  1. Mist the tray heavily so the hulls soften and absorb water
  2. Lay a damp paper towel or cloth gently over the affected area for 15-30 minutes
  3. Lightly brush the towel across the tops — softened hulls pop off easily
  4. For stubborn sunflower hulls, gently pinch them off by hand

Prevention

  • Pre-soak large seeds for 8-12 hours — hydrated seeds shed hulls more easily during germination
  • Use adequate weight during the blackout period — downward pressure helps push seedlings out of their shells
  • Increase humidity during germination by misting 2-3 times daily
