Remove stuck seed hulls with a quick misting trick
3
Seed hulls (shells) stuck on top of microgreen leaves are a cosmetic nuisance that can also block light and slow growth. This is most common with sunflower, beet, and cilantro microgreens.
How to Remove Them
- Mist the tray heavily so the hulls soften and absorb water
- Lay a damp paper towel or cloth gently over the affected area for 15-30 minutes
- Lightly brush the towel across the tops — softened hulls pop off easily
- For stubborn sunflower hulls, gently pinch them off by hand
Prevention
- Pre-soak large seeds for 8-12 hours — hydrated seeds shed hulls more easily during germination
- Use adequate weight during the blackout period — downward pressure helps push seedlings out of their shells
- Increase humidity during germination by misting 2-3 times daily
