Try hydroponic grow mats for clean harvests

4

Hemp, jute, and BioStrate felt mats provide a soilless growing surface that produces cleaner microgreens with less mess. They're preferred by growers selling to restaurants where soil contamination is unacceptable.

Mat Types

  • Hemp mats — best overall moisture retention, biodegradable, pH-neutral. Terrafibre is the most popular brand
  • Jute mats — most affordable (~$2 per 10x20 mat), fully compostable, high water absorption
  • BioStrate felt — lightweight, pH-balanced, ~$0.85 per tray in bulk. Best for arugula, kale, and mustard

When to Use Mats vs Soil

  • Use mats for: radish, brassicas (broccoli, cabbage), wheatgrass, barleygrass, and any variety you sell to restaurants
  • Use soil for: sunflower and pea shoots (need deeper root support and produce better flavor in soil)

Tips

  • Mats dry out faster than soil — may need watering 2+ times daily
  • Not reusable due to contamination risk
  • Pre-soak hemp mats to eliminate natural oil smell before first use
