Use seed-starting soil for robust varieties

Seed-starting mix produces the highest yields and best flavor, especially for large-seeded varieties like sunflower and pea shoots. Microgreens grow one day faster in soil than on hydroponic mats.

• Fox Farms Coco Loco — coconut coir-based, optimal water uptake
• Or make your own: 80% organic material (peat/coir/compost) mixed with 20% perlite

How to Use

• Fill trays with 1.5-2 inches of pre-moistened mix
• Level the surface and lightly compact without packing tight
• Do not cover seeds with additional soil — this keeps sprouts cleaner

Tips

• Soil is messier to clean up than mats but produces better results for most varieties
• Never use garden soil — it may contain pathogens and weed seeds
• A bag of quality seed-starting mix fills 15-20 trays
