Repurpose household containers to save money
3
You don't need to buy specialized trays to grow your first batch of microgreens. Many common household containers work perfectly and cost nothing.
Containers That Work
- Takeout containers — lid nests inside base creating a shallow platform. Base holds water for bottom watering
- Strawberry clamshells — clear lid acts as a humidity dome during germination
- Rotisserie chicken containers — deep enough for soil, clear lid for light
- Plastic lettuce tubs — already the right depth and shape
- Plant saucers — shallow and wide, good for small batches
Requirements for Any Container
- Must be 2-3.5 inches deep for adequate soil
- Food-grade material (no chemical residues)
- Clean and sterilized before use
- Add drainage holes with a heated nail or drill if needed
Tips
- Cardboard egg cartons work but cannot bottom-water (paper is porous)
- Paper towels can test seed germination but aren't practical for full grows
- Graduate to proper 1020 trays once you're hooked — they make everything easier
