Consider different water needs
5
Set up separate water stations for geese and chickens. Geese require open water deep enough for submerging their heads (at least 15 cm) to clean their nostrils and eyes, and they benefit from a swimming tub or small pool. Chickens need shallow, clean drinkers and can drown in water deeper than 5-8 cm, especially chicks and bantams.
Why It Works
Geese splash constantly, contaminating shared drinkers within minutes. Separate water sources keep chicken drinking water clean, prevent drowning accidents, and let geese perform essential head-washing behaviour without risk to smaller birds.
Tips
- Use nipple or cup drinkers for chickens, placed where geese cannot reach them
- Place goose pools at least 3 metres from the chicken coop to limit mud tracking
- Change goose pool water every 1-2 days to reduce bacterial buildup
