How to protect your privacy when using AI tools?

Treat AI chat as a public conversation. Never paste passwords, credit card numbers, social security numbers, proprietary business data, confidential client information, or private medical records into any AI tool. Once submitted, you lose control of that data.

Most AI tools let you opt out of having your conversations used for model training. In ChatGPT, go to Settings > Data Controls > turn off "Improve the model for everyone." In Claude, conversations are not used for training by default on paid plans. Check each tool's privacy settings.

For complete data privacy, run AI models on your own computer. Tools like Ollama, LM Studio, or GPT4All let you download and run open-source models (Llama, Mistral, Phi) locally. Your data never leaves your machine.

If your work requires sharing sensitive information with AI, use enterprise-grade plans. ChatGPT Enterprise, Claude for Business, and Gemini for Workspace offer contractual guarantees that your data is not used for training, is encrypted, and complies with SOC 2 and other security standards.

Create a dedicated email account for AI tool signups rather than using your primary personal or work email. Use a VPN to prevent your IP address from being logged alongside your conversations.
