Call your internet, phone, insurance, and cable providers and ask for a lower rate. Say: "I have been a customer for X years and I would like to see if there are any promotions or discounts available for my account." If that does not work, mention you are considering switching to a competitor.
Why It Works
Retention departments have authority to offer discounts, promotional rates, or waived fees that are not advertised. Companies would rather give you a discount than lose you as a customer. A single 15-minute call can save $20-50/month.
Tips
- Research competitor pricing before you call so you have a specific number to reference
- Be polite but firm — ask to speak to the retention department if the first agent cannot help
- Insurance is the highest-leverage call: bundling home and auto or raising deductibles can save hundreds per year
