Download your data before deleting any account

Before deleting any social media account, download a copy of your data. Every major platform offers a data export tool: photos, posts, messages, contacts, and activity history. On most platforms, go to Settings > Privacy > Download Your Data.

Why It Works

Deletion is permanent on most platforms after the grace period. Your photos, messages, and memories are lost forever if you do not export first. The download also lets you review what data the platform has been collecting about you.

Tips

• Instagram/Facebook: Settings > Your Activity > Download Your Information
• X (Twitter): Settings > Your Account > Download an Archive of Your Data
• TikTok: Settings > Account > Download Your Data
• Exports can take hours to days for large accounts — request the export well before you plan to delete
• Save photos and important messages to a separate backup location
