Use a family DNS filter for network-wide content filtering
4
Set up a DNS filter like CleanBrowsing (free) or OpenDNS Family Shield (free) on your home router. This blocks adult content, malware, and phishing sites across every device on your network — including smart TVs, tablets, and gaming consoles — without installing software on each device.
Why It Works
DNS filtering works at the network level, so it protects all devices automatically, including ones that do not support parental control apps. Children cannot bypass it by using a different browser or app.
Tips
- Change your router's DNS settings to CleanBrowsing (185.228.168.168) or OpenDNS FamilyShield (208.67.222.123)
- This does not replace device-level controls — use both for layered protection
- DNS filtering does not work when devices are on mobile data or other Wi-Fi networks
- NextDNS ($2/mo) offers more granular control and per-device settings
