Change the default router password and network name

5

Your router comes with a default admin password (often "admin" or "password") and a generic network name. Change both immediately. Set a strong, unique admin password and rename your network to something that does not identify you or your router model.

Why It Works

Default credentials are publicly known for every router model. Attackers can log into your router's admin panel, change settings, redirect your traffic, or open your network. Changing the defaults is the single most important step.

Tips

  • Access your router's admin panel by typing 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 into your browser
  • Do not use your name, address, or apartment number in the network name
  • Avoid naming it something that invites attention like "FBI_Surveillance_Van"
  • Set the admin password to something different from your Wi-Fi password
