Consider Button Quail as Ornamental or Pet Birds

2

Select Button quail (Chinese Painted quail) only if you want small, visually striking aviary birds rather than production poultry. Button quail weigh just 40 to 50 grams, lay tiny eggs unsuitable for culinary use at scale, and provide negligible meat. They are quiet, colorful, and often kept as companions in aviaries alongside finches or other small birds.

Why It Works

Button quail fill a niche as ground-dwelling aviary birds that eat spilled seed and insects. Their small size and low noise output make them suitable for urban settings with strict noise ordinances. They require minimal space and can thrive in planted aviaries as small as 60 by 60 centimeters per pair.

Tips

  • Do not choose this breed if egg or meat production is your goal
  • House in pairs or small groups with plenty of ground cover and hiding spots
  • Maintain temperatures above 15 degrees Celsius, as Button quail are less cold-hardy than Coturnix
