Turn Eggs Regularly (Until Lockdown)

5

Turn eggs a minimum of 3 times per day (5 times is better) from day 1 through day 14 for Coturnix quail. Always turn an odd number of times so the egg rests on alternating sides each night. Stop turning on day 15 when lockdown begins.

Why It Works

Turning prevents the embryo from adhering to the inner shell membrane and ensures even nutrient distribution from the albumen. Without turning, embryos develop unevenly, leading to deformities or death. Studies show hatch rates drop below 30% when eggs are not turned during the first two weeks.

Tips

  • Mark eggs with an X on one side and an O on the other to track manual turns.
  • If using an automatic turner, verify it is functioning daily -- mechanical failures are common.
  • Turn eggs gently at a 180° rotation; avoid shaking or jarring.
