Choose Quieter Breeds (if possible)

2

Select quail species or breeds known for lower noise levels when starting or expanding your flock. Button quail (Coturnix chinensis) are among the quietest, producing soft calls barely audible beyond a room. Coturnix japonicus (Japanese quail) males crow but are still quieter than Bobwhite or Gambel's quail.

Why It Works

Different quail species have distinct vocalizations at different volumes. Bobwhite males produce a piercing whistle audible over 500 meters. Coturnix males crow at moderate volume. Button quail vocalize at very low volume. Breed selection sets the baseline noise level before any other management strategy.

Tips

  • For egg and meat production, Coturnix remain the practical choice — manage males for noise control
  • Button quail are ornamental and not suited for production but work well as quiet backyard pets
  • Avoid Bobwhite quail in suburban settings — their call carries far and is difficult to muffle
