Install Secure Latches and Locks

Fit all cage doors and access points with two-step latches, spring-loaded carabiners, or padlocks. Every opening -- feed doors, egg collection panels, cleanout trays -- needs a latch that requires two distinct motions to open.

Why It Works

Raccoons have highly dexterous front paws and can open simple hook-and-eye latches, slide bolts, and lift-type closures. Two-step mechanisms (e.g., squeeze-and-lift carabiners or twist-and-pull latches) exceed their manipulation ability. Studies of raccoon problem-solving confirm they struggle with multi-step sequential locks.

Tips

• Avoid simple gravity latches or single-action slide bolts -- raccoons defeat these routinely
• Use locking carabiners rated for at least 20 lb to prevent a raccoon from pulling them open
• Check all latches at evening lockup; a single unsecured door can result in total flock loss overnight
