Use the finger method for measuring water
4
Place rinsed rice in the pot and level it flat. Rest your index finger vertically on the surface of the rice. Add water until it reaches the first knuckle line (about 1 inch above the rice). This works regardless of the amount of rice because the ratio scales naturally.
Why It Works
This traditional Asian technique has been used for generations without measuring cups. The finger acts as a consistent measuring tool because the water depth above the rice matters more than the total volume. It works for any quantity from 1 to 4 cups.
Tips
- Works best with medium and short-grain white rice
- For long-grain rice, use slightly less water (just below the first knuckle)
- The method is approximate — adjust slightly based on your first result
- Many Asian home cooks exclusively use this method and never measure water by cup
