Install a Nest or Ecobee thermostat yourself

5

Most smart thermostats are designed for DIY installation in under 30 minutes. Turn off your HVAC system at the breaker. Remove the old thermostat faceplate, photograph the wiring, and label each wire. Mount the new base plate, connect wires to the matching terminals, and attach the thermostat. Follow the app setup to connect to Wi-Fi.

Why It Works

Modern smart thermostats like Google Nest ($130-250) and Ecobee ($190-250) come with step-by-step app-guided installation and compatibility checkers. Most standard HVAC systems with a C-wire (common wire) work without modification.

Tips

  • Check compatibility first: both Nest and Ecobee have online compatibility tools that use your existing wiring
  • Photograph your old thermostat wiring before removing it — this is your backup reference
  • If you do not have a C-wire, Ecobee includes a Power Extender Kit; Nest often works without one
  • Turn off the breaker, not just the thermostat, before touching any wiring
