Let the thermostat learn your schedule automatically
5
After installation, manually adjust the temperature for the first 1-2 weeks as you normally would. Smart thermostats like Nest learn your patterns — when you wake up, leave for work, return home, and go to bed — and automatically create a schedule. You can also set schedules manually in the app.
Why It Works
Automatic scheduling eliminates the biggest source of energy waste: heating or cooling an empty home. The thermostat adjusts itself when you leave and pre-conditions the house before you return, saving energy without sacrificing comfort.
Tips
- Nest Learning Thermostat creates schedules from your manual adjustments; Nest Thermostat and Ecobee use manual scheduling
- Set the "Away" temperature 5-10°F different from your comfort setting for meaningful savings
- Use geofencing (in the app) to automatically switch to Away mode when your phone leaves home
- Energy savings typically show up within the first month — check your utility bill
