Teach calming strategies for big emotions
5
Give children specific techniques to use when emotions feel overwhelming. Deep breathing: breathe in for 4 counts, hold for 4, out for 4. Body scan: squeeze and release fists, shoulders, and toes. Safe space: designate a cozy corner with pillows and a calm-down jar where they can go to regulate before talking.
Why It Works
Children cannot process emotions or solve problems when they are in fight-or-flight mode. Calming strategies activate the parasympathetic nervous system, bringing the brain back online for rational thinking. Teaching these tools gives children lifelong self-regulation skills.
Tips
- Practice calming techniques when children are calm, not mid-meltdown
- A "calm-down corner" should feel like a privilege, not a punishment — let children help design it
- Younger children respond well to visual breathing guides: "smell the flower" (inhale) and "blow out the candle" (exhale)
- Books like "The Color Monster" and "When Sophie Gets Angry" teach emotion regulation through stories
