Teach the difference between AI as a tool and AI as a shortcut

5

Help children understand that using AI to learn is different from using AI to cheat. Using AI to explain a concept they do not understand is learning. Using AI to write their essay for them is cheating. The test: "Did I learn something, or did the AI just do my work?"

Why It Works

Children need a clear, simple framework for when AI use is appropriate. The "did I learn?" test gives them a self-check they can apply independently without needing a parent to monitor every interaction.

Tips

  • Good use: "Explain photosynthesis in simpler words" or "Help me brainstorm ideas for my essay"
  • Bad use: "Write my book report" or "Give me the answers to my math homework"
  • Schools are developing their own AI policies — know your child's school rules
  • Teach that AI-generated work submitted as their own is academic dishonesty, just like copying from a book
