Assign age-appropriate household responsibilities
5
Give children regular household tasks that grow with their abilities. Ages 3-5: put toys away, set napkins on the table, feed pets. Ages 6-8: make their bed, sort laundry, wipe counters, set the table. Ages 9-12: cook simple meals, do laundry, clean bathrooms, vacuum. Teens: plan and cook a family meal, manage a budget, do basic home maintenance.
Why It Works
Children who do chores develop self-discipline, responsibility, and a sense of contribution to the family. Research shows chores in childhood are one of the strongest predictors of success in young adulthood — more than academic achievement.
Tips
- Frame chores as "family contributions" rather than punishments
- Teach the skill first, then expect independence — do it together 3-5 times before assigning solo
- Accept imperfect results from young children — effort matters more than perfection
- Avoid paying for basic household contributions — these are part of being a family member
