Create a life skills checklist for each age milestone
4
Make a visible checklist of skills to learn by specific ages. Post it on the fridge and celebrate each skill as it is mastered. By age 10: tie shoes, make a phone call, pack a school bag, write a thank-you note. By age 14: do laundry, cook 3 meals, use public transit, manage a basic schedule. By age 18: change a tire, cook weekly meals, do taxes, schedule appointments.
Why It Works
A checklist makes abstract goals concrete and visible. Children feel accomplishment checking items off, and parents have a roadmap for what to teach when. It prevents the realization at age 18 that basic skills were never taught.
Tips
- Many "life skills by age" checklists are available free online from parenting sites
- Customize the list for your family's values and circumstances
- Include both practical skills (cooking, cleaning) and social skills (ordering at a restaurant, introducing themselves)
- Celebrate milestones — mastering a life skill is as worthy of recognition as academic grades
