How do I frame an exterior corner I can still insulate?
The traditional three-stud corner leaves a hollow pocket that can't be insulated, creating a cold spot and a thermal bridge at every outside corner. There are framing methods that keep the corner open for insulation while still backing the drywall.
- Build a two-stud California corner5
Frame the corner with two studs instead of three: the end stud of one wall, plus a stud turned flat (90°) on the other wall to back the interior drywall. The corner cavity stays open so you can insulate it before closing up.

- Use drywall clips or ladder blocking for backing4
Frame the corner with just the end stud of each wall and provide interior drywall backing with steel or plastic drywall clips, or short flat blocks set ladder-style between the studs. This leaves the maximum corner cavity open for insulation.
