Prevent Coccidiosis

4

Feed poults medicated starter containing amprolium for the first 8 weeks and maintain dry, clean litter at all times. Coccidiosis, caused by Eimeria species parasites, thrives in warm, moist bedding and causes bloody diarrhea, weight loss, and up to 50% mortality in young turkeys.

Why It Works

Amprolium blocks thiamine uptake in coccidia parasites, suppressing reproduction while allowing poults to develop natural immunity through controlled low-level exposure. Dry litter prevents oocyst sporulation — the parasitic stage requires moisture and warmth (25-30°C) to become infective. Together, these measures keep parasite loads below disease-causing thresholds.

Tips

  • Replace wet or caked bedding immediately, as oocysts sporulate within 24-48 hours in damp conditions
  • Avoid overcrowding — keep stocking density below 0.3 square meters per poult to reduce fecal contamination
  • Transition off medicated feed gradually after 8 weeks so birds complete natural immunity development
