Monitor Flock Health Daily

5

Observe your turkeys at least twice daily during feeding, checking for behavioral changes, abnormal droppings, respiratory sounds, and physical condition. Early detection of illness allows prompt isolation and treatment before disease spreads through the flock.

Why It Works

Turkeys instinctively mask illness, so by the time symptoms are obvious, disease may have already spread. Consistent daily observation trains the keeper to spot subtle early indicators — a bird standing apart, slight head tilt, reduced feed intake, or a single abnormal dropping. Catching problems within 24-48 hours of onset dramatically improves treatment outcomes and limits flock-wide exposure.

Tips

  • Check droppings daily — healthy turkey droppings are firm and brown-green with a white urate cap; yellow, bloody, or foamy droppings signal disease
  • Isolate any bird showing lethargy, ruffled feathers, nasal discharge, or swollen sinuses immediately into a separate pen
  • Keep a simple daily log noting feed consumption, water intake, and any behavioral changes to track patterns over time
