For cold (below 20°F/-7°C): block drafts with tarps or plywood while maintaining ventilation, add deep straw bedding, and use heated water bowls to prevent freezing.

Why It Works

Rabbits tolerate cold far better than heat. Temperatures above 90°F (32°C) can cause fatal heatstroke within hours, especially in pregnant does and heavy breeds. Proper climate management directly impacts fertility -- bucks become temporarily sterile after prolonged heat exposure above 85°F. Cold-weather protection focuses on preventing frostbitten ears and ensuring constant water access, both critical for maintaining body condition.

Tips

• Orient housing to catch prevailing breezes in summer and block north winds in winter
• Use a max-min thermometer near the cages to track temperature extremes and respond before conditions become dangerous
• In extreme heat, mist the air around cages (not the rabbits directly) to leverage evaporative cooling
