Colony Housing

4

Set up a secure ground-level enclosure (minimum 10 sq ft per rabbit) inside a shed, garage, or fenced outdoor area. House compatible groups together -- typically one buck with several does, or a group of same-sex growing kits. Bury hardware cloth 12 inches deep around the perimeter to prevent digging escapes and predator entry.

Why It Works

Colony housing allows natural behaviors like running, hopping, and social interaction, which reduces stress and can improve overall health. The larger space and social structure more closely resemble wild rabbit living conditions. Deep litter bedding (6-8 inches of straw built up over weeks) generates composting heat in winter and supports beneficial microbial activity that suppresses pathogens.

Tips

  • Separate bucks from the colony before they reach sexual maturity (around 10-12 weeks) to prevent fighting and unplanned breeding
  • Provide multiple feed and water stations (at least one per 3-4 rabbits) to reduce competition and bullying
  • Include hiding spots such as wooden boxes or PVC pipe tunnels so subordinate rabbits can escape aggression
