Incorporate Resting Periods
4
Give each breeding doe a deliberate rest of 4-8 weeks with no rebreeding, one or two times per year. Schedule rests during peak summer heat (above 85°F / 30°C) when conception rates drop naturally and heat stress poses health risks.
Why It Works
Continuous breeding without breaks depletes body reserves and shortens a doe's productive life. Planned rests allow full recovery of body condition, uterine tissue repair, and restoration of fat and mineral reserves. Does that receive rest periods typically maintain larger average litter sizes across their lifetime.
Tips
- Time rest periods for July-August in most climates, when bucks also have reduced fertility due to heat
- Use the rest period to evaluate doe condition, treat any health issues, and cull underperforming animals
- Expect a reduction of 1-2 litters per year, offset by longer doe productive life and more consistent litter sizes
