Humane Dispatch: Pellet Gun / Captive Bolt

Dispatch the rabbit using a .22 caliber air rifle (minimum 12 ft-lbs muzzle energy) or a captive bolt gun aimed precisely at the brain. Target the point directly between the ears, angled slightly toward the mouth. For a captive bolt, place the device firmly against the same point and fire.

Why It Works

A correctly placed projectile or bolt destroys the brain instantly, causing immediate and irreversible loss of consciousness. The AVMA recognizes both methods as acceptable for rabbit dispatch. A captive bolt eliminates aiming error at close range, making it more consistent than a pellet gun.

Tips

• Restrain the rabbit securely in a holding box or wrap to prevent movement; an inaccurate shot causes suffering and meat damage
• Follow a successful stun or shot with immediate bleeding by cutting the jugular veins within 15 seconds
• Clean and maintain the equipment after each session to ensure consistent performance
