Vertical Space (Cage Height)

4

Build or select cages tall enough for rabbits to sit fully upright on their hind legs without their ears touching the top. For medium to large breeds, this means a minimum interior height of 16-18 inches (40-45 cm).

Why It Works

Rabbits naturally periscope -- sitting up on their haunches to survey their surroundings. Restricting this posture causes chronic discomfort, spinal stress, and behavioral frustration. Adequate vertical clearance allows the rabbit to exhibit normal alert behavior and stretch its spine fully.

Tips

  • Measure height from the resting surface, not from the cage floor if using resting mats or boards
  • Giant breeds (Flemish Giant, Continental Giant) may need 24" (60 cm) of clearance
  • Most standard commercial cages (18" height) meet the minimum for medium breeds
