Introduce Solid Food Before Weaning (Creep Feed)
5
Give kits access to the doe's pellets and hay starting at 2-3 weeks of age. Kits naturally begin nibbling solid food around day 17-18, and providing early access through creep feeding allows their digestive systems to adapt gradually before milk is removed at weaning.
Why It Works
Creep feeding triggers colonization of fiber-digesting bacteria in the cecum while the kit still receives protective antibodies from the doe's milk. This dual nutrition period builds gut resilience. Kits with early solid food access show better weight gain at weaning and lower rates of post-weaning diarrhea.
Tips
- Use low-profile feeders or J-feeders that kits can reach by 2-3 weeks old
- Offer the same pellet brand the kits will eat after weaning to avoid feed changes
- Keep hay available at all times; timothy or grass hay supports cecal development
