Monitor Kits Closely Post-Weaning
5
Observe weaned kits daily for the first 10-14 days after separation. Check for signs of digestive upset (soft stool, mucoid droppings, bloating), dehydration (skin tent test), lethargy, and failure to eat or drink. The first two weeks post-weaning are the highest-risk period for enteritis and mortality in young rabbits.
Why It Works
Weaning triggers major shifts in gut microbiota and stress hormones. Mucoid enteropathy and Clostridial enterotoxemia peak between weeks 4-8, coinciding with weaning. Early detection of diarrhea or reduced feed intake allows immediate intervention such as increasing hay, adding electrolytes, or isolating sick kits, preventing further losses.
Tips
- Weigh kits every 2-3 days; healthy weanlings gain 20-30 grams per day depending on breed
- Provide unlimited grass hay to support hindgut function and reduce enteritis risk
- Consider adding a rabbit-safe probiotic to water for the first week post-weaning
