Quarantine New Arrivals
5
Isolate every new rabbit in a separate cage at least 3 meters from the existing herd for a minimum of 30 days before introduction. During quarantine, observe the animal daily for sneezing, nasal discharge, diarrhea, ear mites, or lethargy. Handle quarantined rabbits last and wash hands and change clothes before returning to the main herd.
Why It Works
Rabbits can carry diseases such as Pasteurella multocida, coccidiosis, or ear mites without showing symptoms for weeks. A 30-day isolation window exceeds the incubation period of most common rabbit diseases, giving latent infections time to surface before they can spread.
Tips
- Keep quarantine cages, feeders, and water bottles completely separate from main herd equipment
- Record daily health observations in a simple log to track patterns
- If any illness appears during quarantine, restart the 30-day count after the rabbit recovers
