Recognize Buck Vocalizations

3

Expect intact bucks to produce loud, low-pitched blubbering sounds during rut season (typically September through January). This courtship vocalization is accompanied by lip curling, tongue flapping, and strong odor. Wethers (castrated males) do not exhibit this behavior.

Why It Works

Understanding that buck blubbering is a hormonal breeding behavior -- not distress -- helps you plan housing and management around it. Since the noise is driven by testosterone, the only way to eliminate it is castration or not keeping intact males.

Tips

  • House bucks at least 30-50 feet from neighbors' property lines during breeding season to reduce noise impact
  • If breeding is not planned, keep wethers instead of intact bucks for a quieter herd
  • Separate bucks from does except during planned breeding to reduce the intensity of persistent blubbering
