Use Treats in Moderation

3

Offer small, safe treats like carrot slices, pumpkin chunks, apple pieces (no seeds), or sunflower seeds as occasional rewards. Limit treats to no more than 1-2 tablespoons per goat per day and use them primarily for training or bonding.

Why It Works

Treats build trust and make handling easier for hoof trimming, health checks, and medication. Keeping portions small prevents disruption to the rumen microbiome, which is optimized for fibrous plant material. Excess sugary or starchy treats cause rumen acidosis and weight gain.

Tips

  • Cut treats into small, bite-sized pieces to prevent choking
  • Avoid chocolate, avocado, onion, and any processed human snacks
  • Use treats strategically during training sessions rather than as free handouts
