Provide High-Quality Hay
5
Offer free-choice access to good-quality grass hay such as Timothy, Orchard, or Brome as the dietary staple for miniature goats. Hay should make up roughly 75-80% of their total diet.
Why It Works
Hay provides the long-stem fiber essential for healthy rumen function. Grass hay delivers a balanced calcium-to-phosphorus ratio suitable for most goats. Alfalfa hay, higher in protein (15-20%) and calcium, should be reserved for lactating does and growing kids to avoid urinary calculi in wethers and bucks.
Tips
- Use elevated hay feeders to reduce fecal contamination and waste
- Inspect every bale for mold, dust, and foreign objects before feeding
- Store hay off the ground in a dry, ventilated area to preserve quality
