Evaluate African Pygmy Goats (with caveats)

Consider African Pygmy goats if you want a miniature breed primarily as a pet with occasional milk as a secondary benefit. Pygmies stand 16-23 inches tall and weigh 53-75 lbs, with a compact, stocky build bred originally for meat, not dairy.

Why It Works

Pygmy goats do produce milk after kidding — typically 1-2 quarts per day for a shorter lactation of 120-180 days. Butterfat content runs 4.5-7%, which is respectable. However, their teats are smaller and harder to hand-milk compared to Nigerian Dwarfs, and total yield per lactation is significantly lower.

Tips

• Choose Pygmies only if dairy is a secondary goal behind companionship or brush clearing
• Expect roughly half the annual milk output compared to Nigerian Dwarfs
• Invest in a small teat milking machine if hand-milking proves difficult
