Install electric fencing around the apiary
4
Set up a multi-strand electric fence around your apiary to deliver a memorable shock that trains raccoons to avoid the area. Use a charger rated at minimum 4,000 volts with at least 0.5 joules of output energy.
Why It Works
Raccoons are smart and learn quickly from negative experiences. A single shock is often enough to prevent return visits. Wildlife agencies consistently rank electric fencing as the most reliable long-term deterrent for mammalian hive predators.
Tips
- Place the lowest wire 4 inches from the ground; raccoons probe low before climbing
- Add a second strand at 8 inches and a third at 12 inches for complete coverage
- Use a solar-powered charger for remote apiary sites
- Clear vegetation within 3 feet of the fence line to prevent grounding
- Test voltage weekly with a fence tester and maintain at least 3,500 volts on the line
- Bait the fence initially with peanut butter on aluminum foil so raccoons contact it with their nose
