Build raccoon-proof hive stands
3
Elevate hives on stands made from smooth metal pipes or slippery surfaces that deny raccoons the grip they need to climb. A stand height of 18-24 inches using galvanized metal pipe legs or cinder blocks topped with a sheet metal platform makes it extremely difficult for raccoons to reach hive entrances.
Why It Works
Raccoons rely on textured surfaces for climbing. Smooth metal legs or greased PVC pipes eliminate traction, and the elevated height forces raccoons to attempt a climb rather than simply reaching the hive from ground level. Combined with a heavy, stable base, this prevents the tipping that raccoons commonly use to access hive contents.
Tips
- Wrap stand legs with sheet metal sleeves (at least 24 inches tall) to eliminate grip
- Bolt or stake the stand into the ground so raccoons cannot knock it over
- Avoid wooden legs or rough concrete, which raccoons can grip easily
- Apply a thin coat of grease to metal legs seasonally for added deterrence
- Combine with ratchet straps to hold hive bodies together as a single unit
