Provide adequate food and water
3
Supplement colony nutrition during nectar dearths and dry periods by feeding sugar syrup (1:1 ratio in spring, 2:1 in autumn) and placing a reliable water source within 15 meters of the apiary. Pollen patties can also be provided when natural pollen is scarce.
Why It Works
Resource scarcity is one of the primary triggers for absconding. When bees detect that stored food is insufficient for colony survival, the entire colony may leave to find better forage. Providing supplemental feed and water removes this survival pressure and signals to the colony that the location can sustain them.
Tips
- Use internal or entrance feeders to reduce robbing from neighboring colonies
- Add stones or floating corks to water dishes so bees can land without drowning
- Monitor hive weight periodically; a sharp drop signals depleted stores
- Avoid feeding during a honey flow as it is unnecessary and can contaminate surplus honey
- Place water sources in partial shade to keep them cool and reduce evaporation
