Reduce hive entrances in cold weather
4
Install entrance reducers during cold weather to help bees maintain brood nest temperature and prevent chilling. Set the reducer to the smallest opening for weak colonies or during severe cold, and widen it as temperatures rise or the colony grows.
Why It Works
A smaller entrance limits cold air influx and reduces heat loss from the hive. Bees expend less energy thermoregulating, allowing them to keep the brood nest at the required 34-35°C (93-95°F). This is especially critical for smaller colonies that cannot generate enough heat to cover a large brood area.
Tips
- Use entrance reducers in early spring, late fall, and during unexpected cold snaps
- Monitor for congestion at the entrance on warmer days and widen as needed
- Ensure the reducer still allows adequate ventilation to prevent moisture buildup
- Weak or nucleus colonies benefit most from reduced entrances year-round in cooler climates
