Insulate hives in cold weather

4

Wrap or cover hives with insulating materials during cold weather to help bees maintain stable brood nest temperatures. Apply insulation before winter sets in and remove it gradually in spring as temperatures stabilize.

Why It Works

Insulation reduces heat loss through the hive walls, allowing the bee cluster to maintain the 34-35°C (93-95°F) brood nest temperature with less energy expenditure. This is particularly important for smaller colonies or in regions with prolonged sub-zero temperatures where bees can struggle to generate sufficient heat.

Tips

  • Use purpose-built hive wraps, rigid foam insulation boards (R-5 or higher), or insulated inner covers
  • Ensure moisture can still escape by maintaining upper ventilation — trapped condensation chills brood faster than cold air alone
  • Prioritize insulating the top of the hive, where most heat escapes
  • Avoid wrapping hives so tightly that bees cannot take cleansing flights on mild days
