Strategic frame placement

Place each new foundationless frame between two frames of already-drawn straight comb. Bees naturally build new comb parallel to adjacent combs, so existing straight comb on either side acts as a template that guides construction in the correct orientation.

Why It Works

Bees maintain consistent bee space (approximately 9.5 mm) between combs. When a foundationless frame sits between two straight combs, bees build the new comb parallel to their neighbors to preserve uniform spacing. Placing multiple foundationless frames side by side removes this guidance and increases the risk of cross-combing.

Tips

• Introduce only one or two foundationless frames at a time between drawn combs
• Wait until new comb is fully drawn and straight before adding the next foundationless frame
• During a strong nectar flow, bees draw comb faster and straighter due to higher wax production
• Inspect new comb within the first few days and gently correct any drift before it becomes established
