Level the hive

Level your hive precisely using a spirit level before introducing foundationless frames. Side-to-side leveling is critical, while a slight forward tilt (about 1–2 degrees) is acceptable to aid moisture drainage. Bees build comb vertically using gravity as their primary reference, so an unlevel hive directly causes crooked comb.

Why It Works

Bees orient comb construction relative to the pull of gravity. When a hive tilts to one side, bees compensate by angling their comb to keep cells level for brood rearing and honey storage. This results in combs that cross frame boundaries and fuse together. A level hive ensures gravity pulls straight down in line with the frames.

Tips

• Check level side-to-side on the top bars, not just the hive stand
• Re-check after rain or ground settling, especially on soft soil
• Use shims or adjustable hive stands for uneven terrain
• A slight forward tilt is fine and helps rain and condensation drain out the entrance
