Hive placement
2
Strategic hive placement is a preventative measure that reduces the attractiveness and accessibility of beehives to bears. Placing hives in open areas with clear lines of sight minimizes surprise encounters and makes bears feel less secure approaching. Avoid placing hives near dense woods, thick vegetation, or known bear trails, as these areas provide cover and increase the likelihood of bear visits. Elevating hives on stands can also offer a slight deterrent. Reducing attractants around the apiary, such as exposed honey, spilled sugar syrup, or strong hive odors, can further minimize bear interest. While hive placement alone may not eliminate bear threats, it is a low-cost, practical step in an integrated bear management strategy.
