Proper hive tool technique
4
Use a hive tool to break propolis seals by inserting the flat end between the frame lug and the hive body ledge, then applying a controlled twisting or levering motion. Work one end of the frame first, then the other, before lifting. This approach distributes force evenly and avoids the damage caused by pulling straight up.
Why It Works
Bees seal every gap with propolis, bonding frames firmly to the hive body. A hive tool concentrates leverage at the glue line, breaking the seal with minimal force. The thin blade fits into the narrow bee space where fingers cannot reach, giving precise control over where pressure is applied.
Tips
- Keep the blade clean between frames to prevent propolis buildup on the tool itself
- Use the J-hook end to lift frame lugs after breaking the side seals
- In cold weather propolis is brittle and breaks more easily; in warm weather it becomes sticky and may need more leverage
- Sharpen or replace worn hive tools -- a dull edge makes the job harder
